Russian Ambassador To Turkey Shot Dead: Assassination on Video in Ankara,Turkey Art Exhibition

On the early morning of December 19, 2016, the Russian ambassador to Turkey, Andrey Karlov,, was assassinated during a speech at an embassy-sponsored art exhibit in the capitol of Ankara.

Several minutes into the ambassador’s speech, the gunman, wearing a suit and tie opened fire, and began to shout in the Turkish language. Video of the shooting was taken, and in this video, CNN has reported that the gunman has said “Allahu akbar (God is great),” a phrase often used by radical Islamic terrorists before they commit a terrorist attack. He continuously said “Do not forget Aleppo! Do not forget Syria!” As he waved his gun around, he told the crowd, “Get back, get back! Only death will remove me from here! Everyone who has taken part in these oppression’s will one by one pay for it!”
Russia has declared the assassination as a terrorist attack. The spokeswoman of the Russian ministry,, Maria Zakharova stated, “We are currently in contact with the Turkish authorities, who are assuring us that a thorough, comprehensive investigation. Will be conducted. Murderers will be punished. Terrorism won’t sustain. We’ll fight it.”

In a press conference, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soyu helped shed some light on the attacker’s identity. The gunman’s name is Mevlut Mert Altintas, and he was a police officer who was off-duty at the time of the shooting. Altintas was born in 1994 (currently 22-years old) in the town of Soke in Turkey’s Aydin province. Anadolu, Turkey’s official news agency, has reported that the gunman has been neutralized; however, it is unknown whether he is deceased or if he was captured alive.

Russia has played a significant role in helping Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s regime retake the eastern section of Aleppo, which has been held by rebels for four years. It can be assumed that the gunman’s anger was pointed at Russia for the inhumane treatment of civilians in Syria, and that murdering the Russian Ambassador was justified. Tomorrow, diplomats from Turkey, Iran, and Russia are set to meet in Moscow to discuss the situation in Aleppo. Who knows how the assassination of Andrey Karlov will effect this meeting.
